Tip of the Month:

Take the time to read your nutrition label and ingredient list to avoid consuming hidden sugars.

How much sugar is too much? How does it affect my health?

Let me begin by saying that according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture the average American consumes approximately 150 pounds of sugar per year. The American Heart Association (AHA) has made a strong recommendation in limiting sugar intake since there can be serious consequences to consuming too much sugar on both your health and your waistline.  The AHA recommends no more than 150 calories (9 ½ teaspoons) per day from added sugar for men and no more than 100 calories (6 ½ teaspoons) per day for women.  Four grams of sugar is equivalent to one teaspoon.

Some of the health consequences of consuming too much sugar are that it increases the risk of:

  • coronary artery disease
  • diabetes
  • insulin resistance (where the body does not properly utilize blood sugar for energy because of malfunction between insulin secretion and blood sugar absorption)
  • elevated triglycerides (form of fat in the bloodstream)
  • high blood pressure
  • bad cholesterol (LDL)
  • weight gain and obesity
  • decreasing the good cholesterol (HDL)
  • tooth decay

You need to be on the lookout for hidden sugar foods.  Among many foods, sugar can hide in:

  • Peanut butter
  • Ketchup
  • Crackers
  • Cereals
  • Candy
  • Soft drinks
  • Fruit drinks
  • Energy drinks
  • Ice cream
  • Bread
  • Muffins
  • Doughnuts
  • Granola bars
  • Chocolate

**once again it is important to emphasize the need to familiarize you with how to read nutrition label and ingredients list**

In past articles we have emphasized the importance of taking a moment to familiarize you with nutrition labels.  Now you need to go a step further and familiarize yourself with the ingredient list to identify these hidden sugars.  I know this may be confusing but just try to read the ingredient list and look for key words that identify added sugars.

These key words include:

  • high fructose corn syrup
  • molasses
  • white sugar
  • corn syrup
  • maltose
  • maple sugar
  • cane sugar

I know that it may feel that you do not have the time to go through both the nutrition food label and ingredient list.  But you should try to become familiar with these key words to avoid hidden sugar. Once in the habit, you will be surprised how little time this takes.

Low sugar options include:

  • Vegetables
  • Water or unsweetened beverages
  • Low fat cottage cheese
  • Avocado
  • Walnuts
  • Whole grain crackers
  • Eat fewer packaged and processed foods

The USDA indicates that approximately 33% of all added sugars consumed come from soft drinks.  Inside sources of the Trucking Industry have shared with us that Mountain Dew is the drink of choice among many truck driving guys and gals.  One 12 oz drink of Mountain Dew equates to approximately 8 teaspoons of sugar!

 What are Sugar Alcohols?

This is a very interesting term since sugar alcohol is neither a sugar nor an alcohol.  They occur naturally in plants.

Examples of common sugar alcohols are:

  • Sorbitol
  • Isomalt
  • Xylitol
  • Maltitol
  • Mannitol
  • Erythritol

Some of these sugar alcohols are extracted from plants; for example, mannitol is extracted from seaweed and sorbitol is extracted from corn syrup.  For the most part they are manufactured from sugars and starches.  Sugar alcohols are similar to sugar in some ways; however, they are not completely absorbed by the body thus they provide fewer calories per gram.

However, one of the side effects of their inability to be completely absorbed by the body is that it can have some unwanted consequences such as diarrhea, gas or bloating.

Taking the few extra minutes to read your nutrition label and ingredient list to avoid consuming hidden sugars will make a positive impact to your health and your waistline.
